Education: Key to Breaking a Vicious Cycle

education-keys

It may be a surprise to some, to know that 60% of our children come from homes where their parents had only a 6th grade education or less. Though a few of their parents went on to Jr. High, sadly none attended high school and college was seen as an unachievable dream.

The two young men pictured above are proof that CHI is breaking this vicious cycle. This is why, at a time when most organizations are being forced to cut back, CHI has increased our spending on education by 37.41% in the last year.

Part of that increase has come from the added expense of sending Julio (left) to college. After spending 11 years at the Home, he has excelled in his first year of Engineering. He is an inspiration to our other Jr. High and High School students; who now dare to dream, that if they apply themselves, they too will have the opportunity to get a higher education and forge a brighter future for themselves.

Uriel, (right), whose story you read on the front page, gives Children’s Haven another chance to make a dream come true. He will graduate this June and would like to attend the same university where Julio goes.

About a year and a half ago, we put out a plea for our ‘Educational Endowment Fund’ later named after Ms. Sue Sexton, former volunteer Interim Director and huge proponent of higher education. To date, a little over $6,000 has been raised, soon some will be transferred to a higher interest bearing CD- but realistically speaking & with interest rates the way they are, it will be a long time till we can reap without touching the principle.

Therefore our new pettition is this:

Please consider how you can best help us meet our children’s present and future educational needs.

Maybe your part will be to:
- Continue to fulfill your pledge of .10ยข a day for 5 years toward our long term goals
- Give an extra one time gift specially marked for current education needs
- Increase your regular giving to general or child sponsorship funds, which is where our increased spending has come from thus far

And why not say it?
Maybe someone reading this will be touched to give $10,000, $30,000,
$50,000 or more so that we really could only use the interest on money from an Education Endowment Fund

Written dutifully, humbly & with great faith and expectation by Betsy Chacon, serving as Exec. Director for CHI & RIN
